The Robin Hood of Korea

From the Summer Writing Class on Main Campus:

2A Class Gi Hwan Sung

A long time ago, a famous thief named Bong lived in Korea. He was medium height and Korean average weight. He had short black hair, a beard and dimples. He was young and athletic. He was very intelligent and brave. One day, he heard an interesting story. The story was about a great king’s tomb that had many treasures. This tomb was hidden behind a traditional door in the outskirts of Seoul. The traditional door was made of many kinds of wood and rocks. Rock stairs were located in front of the door. Some trees and pink flowers were located around the door.

People said “Ghosts live in the tomb”. Many other thieves went to the tomb but they scared by the ghost story. They never saw a ghost, but they imagined the ghost. They made themselves scared. Every thief failed to open the door and enter the tomb. Hong tried but failed too. Hong thought “It’s too hard to open by one person.”

He decided to buy a useful tool. He went to the shop and tried to find a tool. The shop owner was Bong’s friend. Bong talked to him about tomb. The owner listened to Bong’s talk and recommended that he meet a person who was a popular woman thief. Bong’s friend described a thief as a woman with long curly hair and a scar on her left cheek. Bong went to Mt. Nam to meet her.

When he arrived at Mt. Nam, he met her. He asked her “If I get the treasures, I will share that with you. Will you help me?” She answered “Did you go to the tomb? I heard there were many ghosts there.” He told her. “Don’t worry about that. I went there already, but ghosts did not exist.” She decided to work together him. They planned to enter the tomb. They bought some essential tools additionally.

A week later they went to the tomb at midnight. That night was foggy. The moon was hidden by dark clouds. Some stars were twinkling as the only light. They checked their tools outside of the traditional door. They breathed deeply when in front of the tomb’s door. Bong tried to open the door. His partner assisted him. She felt nervous but excited. Eventually they opened the door and went into the tomb. Inside was a very amazing sight and a huge space. It was very spectacular. They were surprised at the sight because many words and pictures were drawn on the wall. These words and pictures were a story about the king’s life after death. The King met a God and met his friends and wives. He lived in an apartment!

Bong and his partner didn’t know the structure on the wall. The picture’s structure was very tall and many people lived in a building. They didn’t believe that. It was too different from their house. They lived where a family lived in each house, not a shared building with other people.

They went deeply into tomb. Some traps interrupted them and made a dark sight. Nevertheless, finally they found the treasure room. They shouted and clapped their hands together. They put treasures into their bags. They went out two times later. They signed their name on the wall. The sign was “We received this tomb and went July 3, XXXX” They went back to their base camp. First time they shared treasure. After a few minutes suddenly Hong said “I want these treasures to share with poor people.” His partner thought for a few minutes and said “That’s a brilliant idea, it is a lot of treasure, so we have to share these things with poor people.” After that day, they went around Seoul and gave money, gold and jewelry to poor people.

In the Pocket is Something

During a writing course this summer, the students did a guided meditation in which they listened to music and had to write down what came to mind. The guidelines were 1. where is the story taking place?, 2. Who is in it and what is their relationship? and 3. What are they doing? After that, each student was given a postcard to look at. On the postcard there was a place for something to be hidden. They were to combine the setup from the music with the hidden mystery of the postcard to write a story. This is Tae Heon's story.

Once upon a time, there was a rich couple who lived in a small town. The couple was very nice and the couple always helped poor people and old people. Most people who lived in the town respected the couple. The couple had one anxiety. The anxiety was that they didn`t have a child. The couple always prayed to God. Their neighbors also prayed for the couple. One year after one day, the wife of the couple became pregnant. After 10 months, the couple got a pretty baby girl ‘Silvia’. A number years later, Silvia became a nice girl like her parents.
Silvia and her parents still helped other people. Because of this family, the town was very peaceful and happy. There was only one bad couple that didn`t like Silvia`s family. They thought Silvia`s family pretended to be good. One day, the bad couple slandered Silvia`s parents to the King, so Silvia`s parents went to prison. Although Silvia didn`t go prison, she had to become a slave of the bad couple. The bad couple were very happy. The bad couple`s son who was named Ted. He didn`t like his parents` behavior. In fact, Ted loved Silvia.
As soon as Silvia arrived at Ted`s house, the bad couple ordered her “Change your clothes! Get ready work!”. She had to change her clothes from clothes which her parents made for her to shabby clothes. She always worked hard, without rest, for the family. Silvia was very tired because she had to always work hard. Ted was so sad and sorry to her. He wanted to give her freedom. He decided to help Silvia become free. One day he heard his parents say “Next week we will go to a party which will be held at the palace. Silvia will be trapped in her small room in the house.” Ted thought ‘It is a good chance for Silvia!.’
One week later, the party day came. As soon as the party time came, the bad couple ordered Silvia “Go into your room!. We will lock the door, don`t try to escape from the house”. She was very sad. When she entered her room, Ted gave her one small note and whispered to her “Read this note after we go to outside”. Although she was very surprised, she didn`t speak anymore. When the family went outside, Silvia read the note in her small room. The note said “Hello Silvia, I`m Ted. We will arrive at home very late. In your room, there are some clothes which you can wear. In the clothes`s pocket, I put your room`s key. Open the door and escape my house. I love you, but I want to you be happy.” Silvia started to cry and she looked at the clothes. The clothes were clean like new things. The clothes were hanging on the wall, and she found key from in pocket.
Silvia escaped from the house, and she became free. Silvia went far away. Nobody knew about the place. Silvia and Ted thought about each other until they died. They prayed for each others’ happiness.

Journal Entry

I’m late again! Again! AGAIN!!

So on the bus, I’m thinking about many things; friends, parent, dreams and my future etc. Seeing the morning sight of River Han (Han-Gang), I can get more optimistic. I love the River Han so much. I can see it from the bus every morning 'cause the bus passes through that road on the bridge. Every time I see the river, it just encourages me to go another step forward. It sounds strange but maybe it might be my close friend more than my brother. Probably I can’t live without that, seeing the sight in the bus.

The morning class students voted on the best poems. Here are their choices:

It sounds like the voice of mother.
It feels heavy and dignified.
It lives anywhere people live.

It smells like sweet blood of white lamb.
It tastes like the flesh of a baby.
It sounds like sawing your arms.
It feels like being deep in the coach.
It lives at night.
~Joe Seung Ki

Peace
It smells like fresh air of the mountain
but sometimes the cheap perfume that I like.
It tastes like cold and sweet ice cream and a warm soft tea.
It sounds like the sound of the sea but becomes still.

It lives any time,
any where
by everybody.

Plane Crash Interview

My students heard a story about a plane crash. They had to come up with questions about what happened to the two survivors. This is what Cho Jong Hyun wrote:

I’m a professional hunter. I have hunted wild animals for 20 years. When I went to Africa, suddenly the plane’s wing was struck by lightning. It fell to the mountain! Unfortunately, there were only two survivors – me and another young boy. We didn’t know what we should do. The boy felt hungry, so we had to go to the jungle to find food. Wow! There were many brutal people! They wanted to kill us, so I explained to them about the accident.

They understood what I was saying and gave us food – monkey brain soup and elephant nose. It was weird but very delicious. The little boy fell in love with the tribal chief’s daughter. We lived there for three years. They are very kind an brave people that hunt tigers, bears, and elephants. I learned a lot of things from them.

I am...

I am why people like spring

I wonder why people like spring.
I hear grass that opens out of the soil.
I see beautiful flowers.
I want to go to the picnic.
I am why people like spring.

I pretend to smell flowers that have a good scent.
I feel a moving butterfly.
I touch the clouds.
I worry about animals hurting me.
I cry because people hurt me.
I am why people like spring.

I understand that the season is changing.
I say I believe in the birds.
I dream of living in nature together.
I try to be a flower.
I hope to fly in the sky.
I am why people like spring.
~Kang Ah Ram

I am why the world exists.

I wonder why the world exists.
I hear the sound made by raindrops.
I see the stars shining with the sun.
I am why the world exists.

I pretend to be a good student.
I feel smiles form my friends.
I touch the ocean full of flowers.
I worry that maybe I am the one who actually bothers my family.
I cry remembering my past.
I am why the world exists.

I understand that 1 + 1 = 2.
I say life is just a dream that is never ending.
I dream of places where I can rest without anger.
I try to make myself better than last year.
I hope that some day I will do something for other people.
I am why the world exists.

Oh My Love is Like a Red Red Rose

From the poem by Robert Burns, the students found other ways to describe love.

My love is like dew that I wasn't aware of when she came to me.
Love is like sitting on the chair all day, forgetting all bad things.
Love is like a roller coaster - exciting in my mind.
My love is like a flutter you feel before opening a gift.
Love is like a crocodile and a crocodile bird.
Love is like a reason to live with passion.
My love is like a beautiful song that gives me pleasure.
love is like a basketball because it's very exciting.
Love is like coffee, a shout for my soul.
My love is like air - to feel him every time.
My love is innocent.
My love is like the thorns with the rose.

Musings of Will...

Musings of Ji Han Lee (Will) on Twitter

If I have wings, I will fly to the middle of desert and see all the stars and sand. After my soul become satisfied, I will tear my wings.

So I could say my actions and thoughts are limited by the language I use. I am a frog living in a small well of Korean language.

The blood that the boy shed was covered with snow and the moonlight takes away the odor. A cat who lost its loving one licks its wound. That is the image that the boy draw in his mind.

Does snow make a sound? Cuz in Korean words, it does have a sound. "sobok sobok"... I wonder what's it like.

I found a coin in my pocket but can't remember when I left one. But the coin must know the day he got left behind in the darkness all alone.
